The Amazing Kids Private School and Academy is the 2016 Disaster Risk Management School Initiative Quiz champion.
They took first place at both primary and secondary school categories during the quiz that took place on Friday at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) Hotel School.
Groot Aub took second place on the primary level, with Auas in third. Second at the secondary level was Hochland High, followed by Rocky Crest High School in the third place.
Grace Nande, a learner from Amazing Kids, says as soon as they had gotten the booklet they started highlighting the most important points and worked on them together as a team. “We rehearsed after school until late sometimes sleeping on the tables while rehearsing,” she says.
Nande adds that the exercise was very informative and educative. “It is very important for schools, learners and teachers to have knowledge of Disaster Risk Management in order for them to be prepared for emergencies. For instance, when fire occurs at school we can manage it without any damage or someone getting hurt,” explains Nande.
Cecil Tjikuzu from Rocky Crest High School says the competition was educative and he learned a lot that he hopes to share with others at school.
“I don’t see this as a competition, because we all gain very useful knowledge that will help us and our school when needed. I wish to see a lot of schools taking part in this quiz for the good of the schools and learners also,” enthuses Tjikuzu.
The Disaster Risk Management School Initiative Quiz is an annual event organised by the City of Windhoek to ensure schools are better prepared for emergencies or disasters that may affect them at any given time. About 72 public and private schools have participated in the initiative since 2012.
