An 18-year-old learner at Omungwelume Senior Secondary School is fighting for her life in Oshakati State Hospital after she was repeatedly stabbed with a knife by a boyfriend.

On Wednesday Ohangwena police seized and arrested a 29-year-old man at Oshakati State Hospital, where he was hospitalised for injuries he allegedly sustained while attempting to commit suicide.

It is reported by the police that the man, a resident of Oshikwiyu village in Omungwelume area, last week fetched his girlfriend, who is also from Oshikwiyu village, and drove with her to Ohalali Village.

Ohangwena police spokesperson Sergeant Abner Kaume Itumba said the man – who cannot yet be identified as he has not yet appeared in court – attacked his lover with a knife and stabbed her twice in the back, and twice in the area around her knee.
What led to the stabbing is not yet known. The young victim, fortunately, managed to escape the furious attack. Following the assault on his partner, the man reportedly drove into the veld near his homestead and tried to hang himself.

His suicide attempt, however, failed when the rope he was using snapped. He then returned to the house where his family lives, from where a family member rushed him to Oshakati Intermediate Hospital to get treatment for his injuries.
The condition of the girl is said to be serious, but stable.

A case of attempted murder, read with the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act, was opened against the suspect, who is expected to be brought before court this week.
