The town of Karibib will be a hive of activity this weekend when some of the country’s top athletes battle it out for top honours in the 3rd edition of the annual Navachab Half Marathon at the town’s Usab Sport Field.
Saturday’s event, which will be headlined by the 21.1-km race, will mark the competition’s third successive edition and the competition’s chief organiser Berthold Karumendu promised a lineup of exciting activities for those in attendance.
As with previous editions, the marathon’s principal sponsor, Navachab Gold Mine, have this year again availed a sponsorship of N$45 000 towards the smooth organisation of the race, while other partners, such as First National Bank (FNB), Namibia Marvel Granit and Karibib Town Council, are some of the co-sponsors, who have come on board to ensure this weekend’s race is a memorable one.
Representing Navachab Gold Mine at yesterday’s press conference in the capital, Navachab Mine’s community relations officer Lion Kahimise reaffirmed the town’s readiness to host the event, saying which is expected to draw more than 200 runners and said all necessary logistics needed to host an event of that magnitude are well in place.
Last year’s edition was won by Uveni-Nawa Kuugongelwa (men’s category), a long distance runner from the Namibian Defence Force (NDF), while Alina Armas, also from NDF, won the women’s category.
Participants are divided into four age categories: the seniors (20-39 years); a junior category (13- 19 years); a veteran category (40-49), and a master category (50 years and more). All four categories include men and women.
