Toughly contested NAMAs deliver surprises

Surprise characterised the weekend’s Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) when Chikune walked away with the much-contested best female artist of the year award in recognition of her album ‘In with the new.’

She won a whopping N$100 000 and a brand-new car, a Toyota Corolla.

“Do not let anyone tell you that you will not make it as a woman,” said an emotional Chikune who did not hold back tears. The teary Chikune, who also thanked her family for their support, promised to take another award next year.

Big Ben also surprised many when he won the best male artist of the year for his ‘Back to the basics’ album. A visibly ecstatic Big Ben thanked his “loyal fans who pay [the] bills” for voting for him. He too walked away with a whopping N$ 100 000 and a Toyota Corolla.

Among the other hotly contested categories, The Dogg who as usual proved to be popular among music fans won the ‘Song of the year’ award which kept many in suspense, for his song ‘Shuukifa kwii’.

“This means a lot to me because my fans judged me. I love you,” said the much-loved kwaito master who additionally scooped the best kwaito award, another fiercely contested category. He did not the leave the stage without urging men to get the ‘smart cut’ – to get circumcised. Newcomer Ann Singer won four awards, including the best newcomer award.

A highlight of the glamourous event must have been the reunion of the Matongo family who had the audience hooked to their tunes.

Gal Level (now separated as Oteya and Freeda) took the audience down memory lane with their mesmerizing songs.

Lady May who has been absent from the music scene after an accident announced her return with her provocative sex appeal dance moves, leaving the audience shouting for more.

Gazza also proved to be the king and arguably one of the best performers of this country when he took to the stage. And Maria Nepembe proved that she is not just a pretty face when she killed the dance floor with Gazza.
