A 13-year-old boy from Kehemu location in Rundu was rushed to Rundu State Hospital after he accidentally detonated an incendiary device – suspected to be a M26 hand grenade – while he was playing on a garbage patch, in which the explosive device was discarded.
The explosion caused serious injury to the minor’s face and left hand and chest. He is currently undergoing treatment at the State hospital where he was admitted on Friday and is reported to be in a stable condition.
According to police sources, it was reported by the family that in the early morning hours of Friday the boy was playing on a heap of garbage in Kehemu when he accidentally detonated the incendiary device.
The incendiary device is suspected to be a South African made M26 hand grenade, said Detective Chief Inspector Ewald Kavara of the police in Rundu.
The boy was identified as Ndumba Mukoya, aged 13, who resides at Kehemu location, where he is a Grade 7 learner at Kehemu Primary School.
Man shoots himself
In other news, a man shot himself in the abdomen, causing his own death at Gongwa Village in Rundu Rural Constituency.
It is alleged that on January 13 at Gongwa village Ndara Romanus Musese, 28, shot himself accidentally with a shotgun in his left palm causing injury to his left upper arm and later shot himself on the right side of his abdomen with the same shotgun about 500 metres from the site of the first shooting.
The deceased Musese was a resident of Gongwa village. Police investigations continue.
