The Namibian Table Tennis Association (NTTA)hosted a gala dinner ahead of the AUSC Region 5 Table Tennis Championships which will take place in Swakopmund from December 9 to 13.
The prestigious event will see teams from Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Malawi, South Africa and Zambia fight it out for a win in Swakopmund’s new multi-purpose sports hall SISC ‘The Dome’.
At the gala dinner, which was combined with a capping ceremony for all three Namibian teams (men, women and development), keynote speaker Agnes Tjongarero, who is the Deputy Minister for Sport, Youth and National Service, encouraged players to play fair and strive to win, but take defeat with dignity. Also, athletes have to say no to all drugs at all times.
Other dignitaries included the People’s Republic of China’s Ambassador to Namibia, Xin Shunkang, Abner Xoagub, President of the Namibian National Olympic Committee (NNOC), NNOC Secretary General Joan Smit and Michael Brown (ITTF development coordinator for Africa & Oceania).
It was also announced that, through funding secured by the NNOC via their Olympic Solidarity programs, Brown will conduct a coaching training camp ahead of the tournament with the Namibian men, ladies and development teams.
The training camp will run from December 1 until completion of the tournament. The NTTA wishes to thank all sponsors who made the event possible.
