“Awareness remains cardinal in educating and trying to ensure earlier detection – this saves lives and this is what we aimed to achieve with the 2015 Spes Bona Properties and Radiowave Cancer Walk in Windhoek,” said Rolf Hansen, the chief executive officer of the Cancer Association of Namibia.
The Cancer Walk was hosted by CAN, in collaboration with two anchor donors Spes Bona Properties and Radiowave 96.74FM, as well as various supporting sponsors on Saturday, September 19 in the capital.
“By closing date of entries on 16 September we had 644 entries, with more late requests accepted until Thursday evening,” says Suann Esterhuizen, project coordinator for CAN.
On the Saturday morning numerous late entries were welcomed for those who really wanted to enter in support of the fight against cancer and over 1 000 Windhoek residents eventually participated.
“We had a goody bag as incentive for the first 500 paid-up entries and 1 000 participatory medallions for entries by 16 September – but based on past walks, we just did not imagine that over 1 000 supporters would come and walk in pink! This shows that Namibians truly have a huge heart for the fight against cancer and this inspires us to go bigger and better next year,” says Hansen.
Planning for the 2016 event commenced immediately on Monday morning and a larger event can be anticipated next year.
The 2016 Cancer Walk will take place on Saturday, September 3 2016.
