Windhoek Gymnasium U/19 cricket team successfully defended its title at the Momentum Week in Windhoek on Sunday.

The boys held the upper hand against Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool (WAP) in the final on Sunday and also triumphed over Pro-Ed in the T20 Challenge finals yesterday.

The prestigious youth tourney kicked off last Wednesday, with three games played in various formats each day. The Momentum Week is widely considered to be one of the best sports development events in Namibia, even if it was only established three years ago.

This year’s edition lent special significance to the tourney as a large portion of the youngsters that will represent Namibia at the U19 World Cup in Bangladesh next year had an opportunity to showcase their skills.

Other participating schools included Windhoek High School, Walvis Bay Private

School and the Platteland Invitational side.

Windhoek Gymnasium’s quest for a second consecutive title was evident from the very beginning as they marched from win to win. Their victory was not only down to exceptional team performances by the Gymnasium, but also to their two outstanding cricketers, Niko Davin and Charl Brits, as evidenced by their statistics.

Davin was the highest scoring batsmen, scoring a total of 265 runs. On average, he scored 51 runs per innings, while teammate Brits, was the most successful bowler. The highly talented young cricketer took 10 wickets in 29 overs, conceded 74 runs with an economy rate of 2.6, as confirmed by the event organisers.

Meanwhile, Tiaan Steenkamp from Windhoek High School was chosen as best cricketer of the tournament. The latter was not only one of the best batsmen, with 315 runs at an average of 45 runs per innings – he also claimed 9 wickets in 33 overs, conceding 168 runs with an economy rate of 4.8.

Cricket Namibia (CN) applauded Momentum for its continued support of the event. Attention now turns to the Momentum Schools League, slated for next week.
