Against all the odds, a newborn baby was found alive yesterday morning – several hours after her mother allegedly dumped her and left her for dead in a pit latrine.

The infant was reportedly discarded in a hole used as a toilet at Onawa ya Kriyana in the Okatana Constituency in the Oshana Region shortly after she was born on Sunday afternoon, but somehow the girl-child miraculously survived more than 24 hours in the pit toilet.

The baby was rushed to the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital yesterday and is reported to be in a stable condition. The suspected mother was also admitted at the same hospital on Sunday after having lost a great deal of blood.

The baby weighed 2.5 kg when she was removed from the pit latrine that the suspected mother shares with her neighbours.

Acting Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner Rauha Amwele said, “The suspected mother was rushed to Oshakati hospital … however, the family was under the impression that she was still pregnant until this [Monday] morning when a baby was discovered in the pit latrine.”

The mother is said to be 22-years old. The pit latrine belongs to the suspect’s neighbour and she was reportedly seen wandering around the pit latrine on Sunday afternoon.

The baby was only discovered in the pit latrine yesterday morning when one of the neighbours heard an infant crying from inside the pit after they had thrown an object into the hole.
