SWAKOPMUND – Coastal Pirates of Swakopmund hosted the final matches in the Namibian Ice and Inline Hockey Association (NIIHA) National Championships at the Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre (SISC) last weekend.
The play-offs and finals from each division were played in high spirits, providing exciting entertainment for the spectators who filled the grandstands to capacity.
Coastal Pirates club players in the Under-8, 10, 12 and 14’s age groups, under the guidance of coach, Brian Sobel, won gold medals in all of these junior divisions. The youngsters played exceptionally well all season with the first three teams coming from the tourney unscathed in league matches all year.
The final Open game, where the top players in inline Hockey competed against each other saw Pirates claim gold at the expense of Badgers. The Ladies Masters division showed great performance and outstanding sportsmanship with the Badgers side walking away with top honours while Scorpions clinched gold in the men’s Masters division.
Afterwards, the NIIHA annual Award Giving Ceremony was conducted at gardens of Rosenhof, outside Swakopmund on Sunday.
