Katutura Shopping Centre Owner Dies

A prominent businessman and local farmer, Matthew Elago, is no more. Elago died from heart failure on Tuesday at the age of 58. His death has been described as a loss to the country. The late Elago was born in 1949 at Oshigambo village in the Oshikoto Region. He came to Windhoek in the 1970’s where he worked as a deliveryman at the BonMilk headquarters now NamMilk.

During the 1970’s he opened a small retail shop from home, selling basic commodities. A few years after, he established himself under the brand Elago Group of Companies, which consisted of butcheries, bakeries and a supermarket in and around Katutura.

He is survived by wife, Sarah, who is also a business personality, six children and five grandchildren. Elago’s memorial service will be held today at Macedonia Lutheran Church in Katutura, at 17h30. He will be laid to rest on Saturday morning at Pionierspark Cemetery.
