Five Suicides Recorded over Weekend

By Surihe Gaomas WINDHOEK Five people committed suicide over the weekend by shooting and hanging themselves, according to the latest police crime bulletin. The eldest suicide victim was 93-year-old Jailus Kefas who hanged himself with a rope in his room. The incident occurred on Saturday evening at around 20:00 at Onashali village in the Ohangwena Region. Similarly, in the Oshana Region, 57-year-old Fillemon Eliander also took his life by hanging himself with a wire in his “sleeping room” at around 19:00 at Emono village in the Oshikuku area. In the Khomas Region, another suicide took place, on Sunday, in Khomasdal at about 14:30 at Erf 4047 residence in Jasmyn Street where 34-year-old George Frodeman shot himself with a pistol through the head. He died instantly. An inquest docket is being investigated at Usakos where another man identified as Alfred Xamseb hanged himself with a belt in a room at an unspecified time at House Number 11 in Hakaseb residential area. His next of kin have been informed. Among the five people who committed suicide 62-year-old Ruth Shilongo was the only female, hanging herself with a rope in her hut. The incident occurred 06:00 in the morning at Omusimboti village of the Ompundja area. In other developments in the Ohangwena Region, a five- month-old baby girl Ndatila Kalemba Abel burnt to death when the room she was in caught fire. It is reported that the mother escaped with serious injuries. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a candle. The incident took place in the early morning hours of Monday this week at Odimbwa village of the Omungwelume area. Staying in the north, a murder occurred at Oluno near Ondangwa at about 14:00 when 38-year-old Thomas Nuuyuni was ” shot and injured in the chest after a quarrel”. The victim died on his way to hospital. A 38-year-old male suspect has been arrested in connection with the crime. The police also confiscated a CZ pistol. A case of armed robbery was also reported to the Namibian Police. It occurred at about 22:30 on Saturday at Count Down Club in Gobabis. “Three armed men entered the club, gunpointed a 30-year-old man and robbed him of cash from the safe and the jackpot machine,” according to the police crime bulletin. The robbers are said to have made off with N$11 579. Meanwhile, the police apprehended one suspect, a 31-year-old Namibian male. The money has not yet been recovered. Also on the same day in the Otjozondjupa Region, one case of rape was reported around 17:30 when a 31-year-old Congolese woman was allegedly gang raped by three men at the Osire Refugee Camp. The suspects are said to be still at large. Police investigations are continuing. In a case of culpable homicide, a driver identified as 53-year-old Immanuel Paulus died at the Katutura State Hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a car accident the previous day. The accident occurred approximately 75 kilometers from Okahandja, Sunday on the Okahandja/Otjiwarango road when the Izuzu truck he was driving crashed into a Land Cruiser. The truck belonged to Pro Parcel Force. The passenger in the truck survived with minor injuries, while the two occupants of the Land Cruiser sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Medi Clinic in Windhoek. It is further reported that two people drowned in the Omusati and Caprivi regions recently. The bodies of the deceased 50-year-old Mutila Mapila and 15-year-old Petra Sekani were found floating in the water canal and dam over the weekend.
