RUNDU - The long arm of the law may bring some people to justice, but there are many instances where the wrong people are detained.

Two young men from the Divava Village in the Kavango Region, Lukas Muhoka (21) and Mario Ihemba (19) were recently released from police custody after they were wrongfully detained for almost two weeks.

They were wrongfully accused of brutally murdering a security guard at the Ngepi Camp. Police said one of the wrongfully detained suspects was rather unlucky, because one of the assailants wore the same shoes as his and the foot tracks led to the house of one of them.

They were released on Wednesday afternoon after police arrested, what they say could be ‘the real suspects’. The new suspects are accused of brutally murdering the security guard and stealing money from the popular tourist camp last month.
The accused are Lucas Sitarara Sintango (36), Johannes Lucas kanyanga (28), Andreas Simboma (35) and Ben Kamonga (52). Sintango is currently out on bail on murder and armed robbery charges.

The suspects are alleged to have murdered Markus Kambinda (40) last month and also stole about N$7500 from the camp’s office. According to Detective Inspector Chrispin Mubebo, none of the money has been recovered.

“They told the police that they shared equally about N$5 000 that was in a cash box they stole, and threw the cash box into the river. Apparently they could not use the rest of the money because it was in other currencies like Pulas and Euros,” he said.

During investigations, police tried to locate the cash box at the place where the suspects alleged to have gotten rid of it, but police divers failed to locate it. Kambinda’s brutalized body was found last month lying in a pool of blood by a fellow security guard.
