WINDHOEK - Hockey equipment worth N$16 000 was donated to five schools by Omina Supplies during a special function that saw the mining suppliers availing 75 hockey sticks, 15 per school, to Elim, Peoples Primary, Namutoni, St. Barnabas and Namibia Primary School in Windhoek on Tuesday.
The beneficiaries will use the equipment as they enter the 3rd round of their Omina Mini-League for the U-12 and 14 age groups in both the boys and girls categories.
“We’ve been involved for almost a decade in this program because we see hockey as a way to keep kids off the streets and most of these kids are from a previously disadvantaged community. It’s a way of giving back to the community and you can see this programme is benefiting the youth because people like Siyabonga Martins were here a few years back when we donated equipment through this same program,” Omina Supplies sales representative Polly Negongo said.
Moreover, the brainchild behind the establishment of the Hockey School of Excellence Erwin Handura, said the schools had little equipment if any and therefore the donation is most welcome and will aid the youngsters to follow their dreams. “Some schools have 5 sticks, others don’t have any at all. We got this equipment from Germany and it is of high quality,” he said.
