WINDHOEK – For the umpteenth time, the popular KIA PTA Tennis Series entertained spectators during a well-attended tournament in Windhoek recently.
One of a kind on the local tennis circuit, this particular tournament series aims to identify top talent among local players by eliminating borders of age and matching players of equal skill level.
In the advance group, it was a close battle for the top spots with Andre Smit taking to the podium with 40 points, followed by Erik Imbuzzeiro and Godwin Husselman trailing behind him on 34 points each.
In the head-to-head match for the second position, Erik managed to beat Godwin in a close encounter 8-7 (7-5).
The 4th spot went to one of Namibia’s former top junior players Veja Hinda who was back in action again. Not being the only tennis talent in the family, Veja’s younger brother Guvi was king of the intermediate group with Oliver Diggle adrift in 2nd place, while a newcomer from Otjiwarongo, Dario Norbeb, took the bronze medal.
In the beginners group, Delvin Losper won gold with Zita Rittmann and Johan Britz (also from Otjiwarongo) both on 26 points battling for the silver medal. It finally came down to the head-to-head match result with Zita succeeding 8-5 against Johan.
The midi court saw a well-earned victory for Enricco de Azevedo followed by Marnus Meyer and Carolina Machado in 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
Enricco is the perfect example of perseverance – the youngster worked his way through the competitive phases from mini tennis to the top of the midi court ranks and walked away as the midi court champion.
