WINDHOEK – Last weekend’s matches in the Bank Windhoek National Fistball League produced exciting action, coupled with surprising results in both the A and B leagues.
Strengthened by former U-18 national team spiker, Thorsten Schmidt-Dumont, Cohen FC 1 (CFC 1) got their day off to a great start on Saturday when they took on A League log leaders, SKW 1, in an intense game. The Germans were troubled throughout the game by Schmidt-Dumont’s accurate serves to which they could not find any answers.
Cohen took an early 3:0 set lead before SKW 1 managed to pull back a set. This proved to be too little too late as CFC 1 took the decisive set by 14:12 points. Nonetheless, SKW 1 retained its top spot on the log standings.
SKW 2 held onto its 2nd place, despite playing without the experienced Michael Baas, whose absence was definitely felt by the team which had to work hard to earn two wins from their three matches.
SFC 1 from Swakopmund struggled to make an impact and lost all their games, which culminated in the seasiders relinquishing the 3rd spot to the resurgent CFC 1 outfit.
The B league produced the biggest upset of the day with league supremos, Cohen FC 3, who had not lost a single match or a set before the start of the day, having to play second fiddle to DTS in what turned out to be the match of the weekend.
CFC 3 took an early 2:1 set lead before DTS got going with some good defensive work and pinpoint spikes, which helped them win the next two sets in a convincing manner.
With the score at 2:3 sets for DTS, log leaders CFC regrouped, but this was not enough as DTS continued their brave attack to take the win in the sixth set of the game by 10:12.
DTS Spiker, Kai Oestlund, was voted DANRIC Auto Player of the Day for his part in this remarkable game. Cohen FC 3 held onto the top spot with DTS jumping from fifth to fourth place on the log.
The fistball season will continue on the 7th of next month with the Cohen Cup. The tournament will have some added international flair with two teams from the Fistball Club Stellenbosch having confirmed their participation in the event.
