Windhoek’s drag strip at the Tony Rust Race Track was a hive of activity with some 70 cars and bikes entering the day’s event, which also ran the third leg of the national drag championships for serious contenders.
In this category the fastest guy on the track was Dewaal Theunissen driving a Toyota Levin who is leading the national car status, with JP Hildebbrandt giving him a good go in a Mitsibushi Evo. Michael Van Zyl impressed with his Golf on the strip.
The action heated up as the day wore on with street cars lined up for the dice which was won by Benjamin du Plessis who clocked the fastest time ahead of Waldo Beukes and Martin Lotter third.
The bikes and quads were also getting their groove on and the National Bike category was won by Mcallen Husselman, with Brandon Einbeck and Nadeem Husselman in second and third respectively. Former racing champion Bazil van Rhyn was making some noise on his 100cc quad bike which is one of its kind in the country.
‘King of the Strip’ Richard Slammet was up to his usual tricks clocking the fastest time in the Open class with Ruaan Vivviers second and Natangwe Lipumbu in third spot.
The day livened up by sounds from DJ ‘Ready D’, and was hosted by the Windhoek Motor Club. The WMC are busy organising a big multiple motor sport week end starting on the 29 June, with South African participants entering as well as the lads from Walvis Bay. Watch this space for more details.
