RUNDU - Special Olympics Namibia, through its Sub-program of Kavango, launched a new programme initiative, “Fit in the morning - fit for the day” at the Kehemu Senior Primary School in Rundu, on Tuesday.
The programme was launched by Maurus Nekaro, Governor of the Kavango Region and was attended by senior members of the Ministry of Education and Sport, Kehemu School Board members, teachers and learners from the special resource unit for learners with learning difficulties.

The “Fit in the morning – fit for the day” is designed for learners in the Kehemu Special Resource Unit and promotes physical fitness through daily exercise, while it aims to improve the general health and teaches the finer points about nutritious foods.
In addition, the newly introduced programme will teach social and thinking skills.
This project is the first such initiative in Namibia and the very first in the history of Special Olympics in Southern African countries.
Through this initiative, local cooperative partners in Rundu agreed to support the initiative with regular donations. This will see
Rundu Spar donating fruit on a weekly basis and Woermann Brock (Oceano) make monthly financial contributions.
Members of a local garden project “Salem Gardens” will donate vegetables on a weekly basis,
“With this new initiative, SON Kavango Sub-program has set a new milestone in spreading the mission of Special Olympics in Namibia,” said Nekaro.
“Special Olympics’ mission is more than sport and sporting competition. I can therefore conclude that this particular programme comprises all components of physical exercise, nutritious food awareness, teaching social skills and about learning of inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.”
