Stars squeeze a win

WINDHOEK – Katutura giants, African Stars, gave basement-dwellers United Stars a good run for their money, after Stars narrowly defeated United 1-0, in a not-so-entertaining match at the Independence Stadium, in Windhoek on Saturday.

Stars’ wayward midfielder Rudi Louw scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute, after receiving a well-calculated pass from Milton Chapo to put Stars ahead.

The results propelled Stars within only six points behind table-toppers Black Africa, who still have a game in hand.

Stars were made to sweat for their victory, as United’s no-nonsense defenders kept Stars at bay for the better part of the first half, but in the second half Stars’ Edwin Korukuze started launching some good crosses down the right wing, which all went to no avail.

In the six remining minutes of the game, Stars striker Muna Katupose almost extended their lead, when he scored from a well-engineered Korukuve cross but the goal was however disallowed as he was offside.

In the only match played on the Friday, Orlando Pirates gave their hard-to-please supporters a reason to smile, when they trounced struggling Hotspurs 4-1 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.

The results moved Pirates into seventh place.
Nicky Musambabi’s two goals were enough to give Pirates the momentum going forward.

Gustav Isaack and Ronald Tsowaseb also added their names to the scoredboard to comfortably give the boys from Dollam a 4-0 lead. Hotspurs replied via Jacky Stephanus to end the game 4-1 in favour of Pirates.

Meanwhile, the game between Wesbank Tigers and Mighty Gunners was postponed to a later date, because of a waterlogged pitch.
