LUDERITZ - The National Arts Council of Namibia (NAC) who aims to encourage widespread public participation in arts, met with approximately 50 young people at the Luderitz Youth Centre to discuss and work out ways on how young people can build strong art organisations on local level, while promoting awareness of the value of arts and thereby also develop professional development of art leaders.
The representative of NACN who met these young people, Lydia Auala, took the youth through the application process, grant allocation, monitoring and evaluation, narrative and financial reporting in order to ensure that they receive the relevant support for their art programmes within their respective communities when they apply for assistance through the NAC. Young people were also educated on visual arts, craft arts, performing arts, media art and art in general. Through this process, young people gained more insight on the aspects of arts, the broadness and the prestige thereof. According to Auala, most grassroots projects are rejected because of incomplete and incorrectly completed funding requests. The NAC's main function is to distribute funding to Namibian artists and art organisations on a representative basis while adhering to the principles of access, equity, quality and democracy. Although the primary focus of the NAC is funding for arts it will also organise national events and promote the development of art administration education in various art genres. Young people in most parts of Namibia are not aware of this type of assistance and so often feel hopeless in their quests to make a success of their artistic abilities and therefore welcomed the visit from the NAC to their town. They are now equipped with the "how to" when constructing art projects in their community. The youth were also challenged to explore more and think wider and more creatively about their ingenious abilities and how they will use the funding to better themselves, their community, and the nation and encourage the development of a sustainable arts industry in Namibia. Also, how they are going to encourage their fellow young people to participate in art programmes. Back to Top |
