WINDHOEK – Namibia has invited 25 heads of state to witness the country’s 20th independence celebrations, an authoritative source has told New Era.Those said to have confirmed their attendance include former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari. Ahtisaari was a key player in the run-up to Namibia’s independence in 1989. He was a Special Representative to Namibia for the United Nations Secretary General, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar. Ahtisaari was also head of the United Nations Transitional Assistance Group (UNTAG). UNTAG was sent to Namibia to help oversee the former South African colony’s independence process. Also expected is Raul Castro, the Cuban President. This will be the second visit by Castro to Namibia in less than a year. Last June, Castro came for a two-day visit to Namibia at the invitation of President Hifikepunye Pohamba. In the sub-region, almost all heads of state in the Southern Africa Development Community have confirmed their attendance. Among them are the current Chairman of the African Union, Bingu Wa Mutharika, who is also the President of Malawi, South African President Jacob Zuma, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Jose Eduardo dos Santos of Angola and Rupiah Banda of Zambia whose nation played a crucial role in the liberation of many southern African countries. Nigerian Vice President Goodluck Jonathan is also said to be coming. Government has launched activities leading up to the main celebrations. Some of these are public lectures addressed by high-ranking public leaders, art exhibitions, and television broadcasts of specially produced programmes on national television among other things. The main celebrations will take place on March 21, while regional celebrations will be held on the weekend of March 25. Back to Top |
