WINDHOEK – Minister of Safety and Security, Dr Nickey Iyambo, says there should be no room for complacency or compromise on the level of discipline for the men and women in uniform.
Speaking at the opening of a senior commanders’ conference in Windhoek yesterday, Iyambo said the police faced enormous challenges during the campaign for the Presidential and National Assembly elections. He congratulated the commanders on the performance of their staff and said it was a sterling performance that needs to be applauded. “When you provided security at political meetings, rallies and during the transportation of ballot materials to all the regions of the country and their respective constituencies and polling stations, when you had your men and women guarding those polling stations day and night, when you thwarted illegal activities by some members of the electorate and electoral officials, that was not an easy task.” He said a few members, whose bad conduct tarnishes the good name and image of the national police force, must either toe the line or quit the ranks. “The good name of the force and our ministerial core values of teamwork, integrity, fairness, transparency commitment, accountability and loyalty cannot be sacrificed on the altar of dishonesty and criminal conduct,” he said. Iyambo said he is aware of the acute shortage of personnel in some areas of policing due to death, resignations, transfers and ill-health but the commanders must know that they have a plan as contained in the Third National Development Plan (NDP3), and the corporate scorecard of the ministry for 2009-2014. He expects full implementation of the Ministerial Strategic Plan that set targets for recruitment and training for the 2010-2011 financial year. This, Iyambo said, must be met to mitigate the effects of the high number of personnel losses. The current manpower, Iyambo said, must be afforded the opportunities for in-service training, so as to improve their day to day performance. He thanked the news media for always serving as a bridge and conveying police events and messages to the public. He, however, called for greater cooperation between police and all strata of society this year. Back to Top |
