WINDHOEK - A three-year-old boy from Kazauli village in the Caprivi Region was murdered in a case suspected to be associated with ritua-listic muti killing.
This kind of killing usually involves murder and mutilation in order to excise body parts for incorporation as ingredients into medicine and concoctions used in witchcraft. Often children and the elderly are the victims, both male and female. A relative to the deceased related to New Era yesterday that on Thursday morning, the grandmother to the deceased left home to collect her monthly pension payout at a place not so far from her dwelling. When she returned from the pay point some children at the village informed her that three men, one allegedly a cousin to the deceased, had abducted the boy. Upon hearing this, the grandmother began a search with the assistance of other villagers. After hours of searching without success, the police were notified and they also undertook a search for the boy. "We searched all over, in the nearby bushes, along the Zambezi River, all over until Friday but we could not find him," a relative narrated. The search conti-nued on Friday mor-ning until 16h00 when some man approached the family and said there was a floating body in the river, perhaps it was that of the missing child. "At a crossing point of the river, where we had searched less than an hour earlier, that is where the body was found, the foot prints were still there. The neck was broken but I could not see if other body parts were there because the police quickly collected the body," the relative said. Police investigations into the case continue and the suspected cousin is still at large. "We hear the guys took money for muti in Zambia and since it is near and easy to cross the river maybe that is why they took the boy. He was an only child," the relative added. There are no statistics of the number of muti murders in Namibia. Police could neither confirm nor deny the case with the Caprivi Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner Tyves Kampolo, saying, "It is not my policy to talk to the media over the telephone. Come to me tomorrow." Back to Top |
