WINDHOEK - More than 1 000 cyclists will take to the streets of Windhoek on Sunday in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the annual Nedbank Cycle Challenge. The "Swabank Cycle Tour", as it was known at the time, attracted a record 84 participants in her maiden edition in 1986, which prompted the then-Chairman of the organising committee, Claus Theissen, to comment: "This overwhelming support has put cycling for sport and recreation firmly into the minds of all Windhoekers". In its 25th year of existence, the Nedbank Cycle Challenge has attracted participants from all over the country and has become a showpiece event for the promotion of cycling and a healthy lifestyle. "Cycling has always been one of Nedbank Namibia's strongest sporting affinities", said Gernot de Klerk, the bank's Communications Manager. "Our support for the sport has been amplified by our N$200 000 headline sponsorship of the African Continental Road Cycling Championships held in Windhoek in November last year, and more recently when we joined up with the internationally-acclaimed Namibian cyclist, Dan Craven, to host the Nedbank/Cymot Training Camp for promising young cyclists at Omaruru last month". Defending Nedbank Cycle Challenge champions, teenagers Till Drobisch and Vera Adrian, also attended the camp to ensure that they are in the best possible shape to successfully defend their titles as men's and women's champions respectively. "As always, Nedbank Namibia is proud to have our loyal partners, Coca Cola, Radio Wave, Namibia Health Plan (NHP), and Windhoek Pedal Power join us in making this year's Nedbank Cycle Challenge a resounding success, while medical back-up will again be provided by International SOS," De Klerk said.
