CAPE TOWN - The International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA) will host its international arts and culture summit for the first time on African soil, at the Museum Africa Newton in Johannesburg in September next year.
This was announced at the dialogue on arts held in Cape Town recently. This summit will be under the theme "The Role of Promoting Intercultural Dialogue: Meeting Cultures: Creating Meaning". The event will be an opportunity for African countries' arts and culture sectors to be represented and share experiences and expertise in arts management and organisation from main role players in the industry on an international platform. It will also be a platform for African nations to share their multitudes of rich arts and cultural expressions with their colleagues from across the world. This event showcases performances and exhibitions from the various creative industries within the African continent. Speaking at the dialogue on the arts Executive Director of IFACCA, Sarah Gardner, said there is a need for African representation and direction when it comes to its creative industries. "Therefore holding the summit on the African continent is but one highlight and big step towards realising that direction," Gardner said. Some of the objectives of the summit would be to show the positive impacts of the role of national arts and/or culture councils, to portray unity via the different cultures, create documentation and build information sharing networks through Africa, get African speakers of various topics on the arts and culture sector and to show African arts and artists. "With over 100 national and affiliate member governments and agencies from all over the world, IFACCA has grown from strength to strength in just a few years. Their research and information are aiding better informed government support towards arts and culture. Additionally, the IFACCA is in the process of beginning an international campaign on the value of artists, which is much-needed for the importance of the sector to be acknowledged and supported by main industry role players in governments and the private sector," she said. The first world summit on arts and culture was held in Ottawa, Canada, in December 2001, the second was held in November 2003 in Singapore and the third summit was held and hosted by England in June 2006.
