WINDHOEK â€" President Hifikepunye Pohamba has condemned last Friday's shooting incident against the Togolese national team in Cabinda Province, Angola.
In a statement availed yesterday, President Pohamba condemned "in the strongest terms such a cowardly attack on innocent civilians". "The Africa Cup of Nations is regarded as a social event within the continent whose aim is to strengthen unity among the African people and thereby further strengthen peace, friendship and stability on the African continent," he said. He extended his sympathy to the bereaved families, as well as the Togolese government, and wished those who were injured in the incident a speedy recovery. Three people lost their lives and several soccer players sustained injuries. The team was scheduled to participate in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, which kicked off in Angola on Sunday.
