WINDHOEK – The National Women’s Under-20 football team have gone into intensive training ahead of their FIFA Under-20 World Women Championships African qualifier first leg against Botswana in Gaborone, on Friday.
According to the head of the NFA Women’s Desk, Jacky Gertze, a strong 27-member squad has been in camp since Monday last week. The squad will be trimmed down to a manageable 20 to be accompanied by five officials. “We have assembled a great squad and the spirit is absolutely phenomenal. We are looking at doing well in Gaborone before the return leg in Windhoek,” Gertze said. The first leg is scheduled for the Botswana capital Gaborone at the University of Gaborone Stadium on Friday night at 19h00 with the return leg to be staged in Windhoek on December 20, at the Sam Nujoma Stadium. Namibia’s provisional squad includes six players from the team that represented the country at the COSSASA Under-17 Ball Games. They are: Senapha Koolman, Tomalina Adams, Albertina Davis, Melanie Hiknam, Mellissa Goliath and Monique Krone. Okahandja Beauties’ sensation Susanne Eises is expected to captain the travelling entourage. Gertze also revealed that former African Stars and Eleven Arrows Zimbabwean coach Gilbert Rwasoka, has been roped in as assistant and will lead the team in the absence of head coach Jacqueline Shipanga, who is currently abroad on a FIFA assignment. So far, Africa have had only two representatives at the bi-annual championship since the 3rd edition in 2006, with perennial competitors Nigeria and DR Congo once again the firm favourites to book their places for the June 26- July 27 showpiece in Germany. The United States of America (USA) are the defending world champions - having won the youth championship twice already in 2002 and 2008, with China (2006) and Germany (2004) boasting one win each. The team leaves for Botswana tomorrow morning. Back to Top |
