WINDHOEK – Five years ago, a penniless student, armed with only BA degree in Psychology obtained from the University of Namibia, left her motherland to seek her fortune in the United Kingdom.
This month that student returned to Namibia with not only a new surname, but as the author of a motivational book and as a qualified success-coach serving clients scattered across the world. Local lass Deidré Carballo, who is also a qualified Neuro Linguistic Programmer, explained to Art Life this week that all was not plain sailing. Her book, titled, Journey of a thousand miles to successful living, is about personal transformation and how one can realise one’s dreams. Her self-discovery journey began in London when she was made redundant from a job she really enjoyed. “The company went bankrupt and it was my first real job in the city. My working holiday visa had only a year left so no other company was interested in hiring a foreigner. I eventually found a job as a front of house security officer! I was letting life’s circumstances direct my way forward. I was unhappy, virtually crying everyday while doing a 12-hour a day job I hated so much!” she recalled with sadness. It was during this time of near depression that a friend took her along to a motivational talk, and the rest, as they say, is history. Carballo began devouring books by motivational authors. Her self-discovery journey became a passion and within two years she had completed two life-coaching courses with reputable institutions in London. She started giving informal talks to her colleagues and by word of mouth these led to formal classes. Her clients included directors, managers, internal auditors, chief financial officers, students and school learners from England, Dubai, Australia, Namibia, South Africa and the US. During these courses she had to prepare manuals for her clients and it was out of these resources that her book was born. “The book is about self-discovery using personal development tools and techniques that will certainly help the reader on this journey of life,” Carballo explains. She initially printed 500 copies, but these have been practically sold out and she is looking at having the second edition published locally. Although Carballo plans to continue presenting life-coaching courses locally, she is very excited about becoming involved with local school children. She says she has had recurring dreams about the needs of the African child. “I want to reach out to the African child. I’d like to do some school talks and help to enrich children’s lives and help them to decide their future. These life-coaching lessons are a wonderful tool for them. The book is cheap, very goal directed and easy to read and is also very life transforming,” she said. Carballo is of the opinion that most school learners do not know what to do after completing Grade 12. “I want to plough back into my community needing solutions to the future – either for business or studies or their personal lives. I grew up in the township and I am quite familiar with this background,” she asserted. Carballo is prepared to conduct workshops and seminars for adults on topics such as goal setting, assisting entrepreneurs, customer service, leading a healthy lifestyle and leadership. “When one dreams to achieve, anything is possible if you put your mind to it. What you pay attention to grows in life,” she concluded. Carballo may be contacted at 0855555045. Her website is www.easy2binspired.com. Back to Top |
