WINDHOEK – The Namibian rugby fifteen are just 80 minutes away from making their fourth consecutive appearance at the IRB World Cup finals to be hosted by New Zealand in 2011.The Welwitschias, as the Namibians are fondly known amongst their ardent followers, take on Tunisia in the final leg of the IRB African qualifier at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek tomorrow. Namibia take a slender 18–13 lead from their first leg win in the Tunisian capital a fortnight ago. Victory for the hosts will see them joining big brother and reigning champions South Africa in Group D of the World Cup finals alongside Wales, Fiji and Samoa. The visitors have never won on Namibian soil and will be determined to follow in the footsteps of their hosts and break that duck as the Namibians did during their recent northern safari to Tunisia. However, the northerners will be facing a team that has been invincible at what has become their slaughterhouse if their comprehensive win against the Ivory Coast in the semifinals is anything to go by. Namibia buried the muscular Ivorians under an avalanche of tries in the second half to run out 54–14 and booked a place against old nemesis Tunisia in the two legged final. Tomorrow’s match will serve as an emotional departure for coach John Williams who will be in charge of the Welwitschias for the last time. Williams is accredited for having transformed an ordinary amateur team into a competitive unit during his 18 months spell at the helm of the Namibian rugby team. The Namibian starting lineup reads as follows: 1 Kees Lensing (captain), 2 Hugo Horn, 3 Marius Visser, 4 Heinz Koll, 5 Nico Esterhuizen, 6 Jacques Burger, 7 Jacques Niewenhuis, 8 Tinus du Plessis, 9 Eugene Jantjies, 10 Emile Wessels, 11 Bradley Langenhoven, 12 David Philander, 13 Piet van Zyl, 14 Tinus Venter and 15 Chrysander Botha. Substitutes: 16 Shaun Esterhuzen, 17 Johnny Redelinghuys, 18 Jane du Toit, 19 PJ van Lill, 20 Ismael du Plessis, 21 Uakazuvara Kazombiaze, 22 Robert Herridge. Back to Top |
