OKATOPE â€" An elderly father from Okatope village is dragging the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) coordinator in the constituency to the local traditional court after his son sustained back injuries while putting up an RDP flag on a tree.
Eliaser Nghidengwa spent two weeks in hospital at Oshakati Intermediate Hospital after falling from a tree while putting up an RDP flag. Although he has been discharged from hospital, he still uses crutches and is booked off for a doctor's check-up and physiotherapy. Eliaser and his parents also fear that he might never completely recover and become able-bodied again. According to his father, Elias Nghidengwa, Eliaser was the only breadwinner at home. He worked night shifts as a security guard at local cucashops. He is also a builder. Nghidengwa (the father) said he was called one morning and informed that his 30-year-old son was sick and was in a critical condition. "When I went to the place where he was working as a security guard, I could not believe my eyes! He could hardly talk and could not stand up or even sit down as he was in a very bad shape," said Nghidengwa. When he asked his son and his son's friend, Nghidengwa was allegedly told that Eliaser fell into a pit and hurt his back. Nghidengwa allegedly traced his son's tracks to a tree alongside the Eenhana-Onhuno road. "I got the shock of my life, I thought my son had attempted suicide, his shoes and his cap were still on that tree. When I looked up I also saw some palm leaves. I thought he was using that to hang himself," said Nghidengwa. When Nghidengwa went back to ask Eliaser why he attempted suicide that was when he learnt that his son had fallen from a tree while trying to put up an RDP flag around midnight. Relating what had happened on the day of the accident, Eliaser said he was drinking with his friends when a certain John, who is a member of RDP, approached him. John allegedly asked Eliaser to put up a flag on a tall tree next to the road in exchange for N$20. "He said I should put up the flag at night so that when people wake up in the morning, the flag would be up already. I cannot remember what exactly happened but I know that I fell after I had put up the flag. But when I fell he did not give me the money," said Eliaser. Eliaser has now approached the headman of Okatope to inform him of his decision to take the RDP district coordinator at Okatope to the traditional court. "He is the one that sent John to approach my son. Now he (coordinator) gave us N$100 to take my son to the hospital but that money will not help me at all. My son was the breadwinner and as you can see, it will take him another two to three years before he starts working again," said angry Nghidengwa. On Friday, Nghidengwa called Ohangwena Regional Governor Usko Nghaamwa to witness what had happened in his area. Nghidengwa also informed the Governor about the decision to sue RDP coordinator through the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority. Back to Top |
