Dear readers, yours truly is quite certain that you may agree that raising questions is much easier than providing answers to questions raised. The ultimate aim is to provoke debate since there is absolutely no monopoly of knowledge anywhere in the world.
As much as we all have a little bit of understanding of how things should be done – there is an urgent need to digest the complexity of the inner doings of sports codes - notably in the province of development and transformation. A lot has been mouthed over the tortoise-paced fashion in which many a sporting discipline has gone about the business of development and transformation. But nobody has put it instinctively better in crystal clear Namibian tone than Albertus “Pabzo” Aocahmub. Pabzo’s call for genuine transformation in the previously lily white golfing code is long overdue and must have left the powers that be at the National Sports Commission with egg on the face, so to speak. It’s the sole beat of the Commission to ensure that genuine transformation takes place amongst their subjects but the seemingly permanently dozing brothers were caught with their pants down for the umpteenth time. Misrepresentation of Transformation It’s a well-documented secret that many sports codes are in the habit of compiling juicy development programmes aimed transformation and table them before sports authorities for approval and subsequent endorsement. But alas, this is where it all ends – bringing us to conclude that these supposedly well meant progammes are not even worth the piece of paper they are written on. I’ve always believed that transformation should not be confused with development because the latter is the nurturing of talent and talent identification must not have a colour coding, period! Transformation is about creating opportunities to disadvantaged athletes to showcase their talents. Westerhof a disgrace to the oath of African Football Never in my life as a sports journalist had I ever experienced first hand how inherently racist the mindset of some European football coaches can be. Without beating about the bush, yours truly was annoyed to the extreme with remarks by former Super Eagles coach one Clemens Westerhof, whose views about the progress of African football are totally offside. Westerhof, who was in Namibia on the invitation of Black Africa FC, addressed the media last week to share his “knowledge” and views about Namibian football and Africa in particular. His sick mind simply believes that African nations will never progress without the input and presence of European coaches and is of the opinion that black coaches are inferior to their white counterparts. It never occurs to him that a black coach could be better than his pale skinned counterpart. The old man even had the audacity to write an obituary for Nigeria’s predicted failure to advance through to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa under the guidance of Shaimbu Amoudu. He even hinted that Amoudu would be booted out even if a miracle happens and Nigeria qualifies for the World Cup finals. Well, he was made to eat humble pie as the Super Eagles went on to qualify for the global showpiece in great fashion after seeing off Kenya with Amoudu at the helm. There is no place for people like Westerhof in African football and the quicker he keeps his big mouth shut about African football the better for his own sake. I rest my case. Back to Top |
