WINDHOEK â€" Namibia's rugby fifteen are just another 80 minutes away from making their 4th consecutive appearance at the International Rugby Board (IRB)'s World Cup finals, this time in New Zealand in 2011.The Welwitschias, as the team is fondly known amongst its followers, defied all odds stacked against them when they saw off the robust Tunisians in their own backyard in the first leg of the final African qualifying berth in Tunis, Tunisia on Saturday. John Williams' charges went into the match in high spirits on the back of a well-deserved win over Portugal in a test match in Lisbon a week prior to their penultimate World Cup qualifier in the hostile northern African city. Livewire fullback Chrysander Botha put the Namibians ahead with a copybook try and the Kudus' talisman dusted himself off to send the resultant conversion neatly between the posts to give the visitors a 7-0 lead. The hosts reduced the deficit via two well taken penalties (7-6). Fly half Emile Wessels stretched Namibia's slender lead when his perfectly dispatched penalty hit the target shortly before the changeover. Namibia led 10â€"6 at the break. As the match wore on, the visitors stepped up the momentum and were finally rewarded when hooker Hugo Horn went over for his team's 2nd try of the match (15-6). Tunisia responded immediately with two penalties to move within two points but that oak door of the Namibian defence held firm and gave nothing away. Wessels added to Namibia's tally when he struck a late penalty to extend the Welwitschias' lead to 18-13. And that's how it remained: Namibia 18 â€" 13 Tunisia. The two nations will meet again for the 2nd and final decisive leg at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on the 28th of this month. The team arrives at Hosea Kutako International Airport outside Windhoek this morning. A press conference is scheduled upon the team's arrival at the VIP Lounge at 08h30. Back to Top |
