WINDHOEK â€" Two intriguing days of blood, sweat and tears were the trademark of the much-trumpeted Khomas Boxing Sub Federation Olympic Style Regional Championships at the A Shipena School Hall in Windhoek, last weekend. In a typical amateur fashion â€" boxers climbed into each other, pulling no punches with a significant number of the bouts resembling two peacocks vying for each other's throat over a fatty worm in the early hours of the morning. Boxers from 5 different clubs traded blows for selection in the Khomas regional team to represent the region at the National Championship next month. Natanael Kamati came out top in his lightweight fight against Immanuel Shapaka (3-0) whilst Andreas Amupolo scrapped past Nelumbu Paulus (2-1) in the flyweight division. Norbert Ashuvudhi overpowered Johannes Nangolo (3-0) in their bantamweight semifinal to secure himself a place in the final squad. Erastus Marenga defeated Nakadhila Jeremia (2-1) in the featherweight division while Mika Shonena came out unscathed from his lightweight bout against Martin Ipumbu after the latter retried in the 1st round. Titus Iyambo saw off Festus Nghidimwa (2-1) in their light welterweight division bout and Michael Kavari proved too strong for Johannes Shoombe with an identical scorecard in the welterweight division. Middleweight boxer Walter Kautondokwa had the better of the proceedings in his fight against Lukas Ndafoloma after the referee stopped the contest in the 2nd round. In the light heavyweight division, Kasera Sirongo peppered his opponent Chris Kangoronduezu with a combination of punches that prompted the later lose further interest in the contest midway through the 2nd round. Johannes Shinendima emerged victorious in his heavyweight bout against the clearly out of sorts Fanuel Sam who retired in the 3rd round. The super heavyweight bout between Ure Uuwanga and Sacky Nakatana had the crowd in stitches as the two clearly unfit boxers demonstrated a serious lack of basics in the business of boxing. The exhausted Nakatana sought refuge in one of the ring's corners with his back turned to his opponent and refused point-blankly to continue with the fight midway through the 3rd round despite vehement protests by his corner to carry on with the business at hand. The referee was obliged to grant him his wish and Uwanga was declared the winner. Back to Top |
