WALVIS BAY - Walvis Bay celebrated national radiography week recently - for the first time in Namibian history since radiography was invented on November 8, 1895 by a German physicist Willem Conrad Roentgen.
The invention has contributed tremendously to the improvement of diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Dr Ilinga Musasa from Walvis Bay State Hospital said radiography is useful to people's health and daily lives but dangerous when abused. It is against this background, he said, that the celebration is centred on public education. "This started since yesterday in our town of Walvis Bay to explain to the public the purpose of radiography week, the services offered by various radiology and oncology departments in the country and the role of the radiographers in health care provision," he said. Radiation energy is a form of waves and is generally invisible. It is used in medicine as supporting service in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Since many people are not aware of the meaning of radiography, Musasa is appealing to parents to encourage their children to learn this field for continuity of care of people. "Radiation is important to diagnose and treat diseases but when abused it can cause more damage than benefit. So it is not wise to demand examination that is not necessary and will not help in a specific situation, and especially pregnant women should avoid exposure to radiation," he added. He explained that the use of sun block cream will help to reduce exposure to UV radiation but is not totally effective in preventing skin cancer. Radiation in the treatment of cancer and other related diseases, Musasa said, may cause effects such as nausea and vomiting. To best assess the beneficial uses that might expose one to radiation, he said, one has to be informed and learn why one has to receive a dose of radiation. Meanwhile, the mayor of Walvis Bay Uilika Nambahu has urged the public to visit different radiography departments of hospitals to learn more about technology and to gain first hand information from medical staff about its use and benefits. There are seven qualified radiographers in the Erongo Region. Back to Top |
