WINDHOEK - The South West Africa National Union (Swanu) says although it has made tremendous contributions to the country, there is still much that it needs to accomplish.
"As Swanu members, while celebrating our success in our modest way, we should utilise this opportune moment to focus on the future. Today we are at the dawn of a new era that is full of promise and challenges for the Namibian nation. As time changes, our party has to change too," Swanu President Usutuaije Maamberua said during the party's 50th anniversary celebration on Saturday. Maamberua said Swanu must shift its strategies and create a new vision for the country. "We are on the brink of a new era - an era in which Swanu will no longer be looked at as an opposition party or non-existent, but a leading Namibian political entity. The future is ours if we embrace it," Maamberua said. The party president said as the oldest nationalist organisation, it is up to Swanu to lead the nation into the next century and ensure that all Namibians become participants in a collective development agenda. Maamberua said challenges such as HIV/AIDS, poverty and unemployment, as well as the floods experienced in the northern regions of the country can be controlled given the necessary political will and appropriate level of national unity. The challenges, Maamberua said, have worsened existing inequalities between rich and poor, especially urban versus rural poverty. The Swanu President called for the promotion of equal citizenry in Namibia, hence stating that the party will continue to be associated with international solidarity groups and movements, especially in Africa and elsewhere. With regard to the atrocities committed during the colonial times, Maamberua said Swanu, as the immediate successor of the heroes and heroines of the anti-colonial resistance, represents the interests of victims of colonialism and genocide within the broader framework of the liberation struggle. "Swanu's position on reparation is that it must not be a matter of goodwill and generosity but a historic obligation that is long overdue, and must be honoured now," said Maamberua. Maamberua stated that Swanu needs more recognition in the country for its role in the liberation of the country. "Therefore it is not farfetched to suggest that Swanu deserves a place on the 'high table' during Namibian Heroes Day commemorations," he said. According to Maamberua, it is long overdue and Swanu should be the main speaker at the Heroes Day commemoration next year. The occasion was graced with the presence of Swanu supporters, party elders, politicians such as Nora Schimming-Chase, Joseph Kauandenge, the Botswana High Commissioner and Norman Moleboge to mention but a few. Swanu members were in a jubilant mood, while a cultural group entertained the audience. Back to Top |
