SWAKOPMUND - The Aquaculture Association of Southern Africa, also referred to as AASA, for the first time in its history held its bio-annual conference outside South Africa.
This year the conference was held in Namibia, where Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Dr Abraham Iyambo was awarded a prestigious award as best achiever in the SADC region, according to the head of Kamutjonga Inland Fisheries Institute (KIFI), Ekkhard Klingelhoeffer. "We decided that as the best achiever in SADC region who has been promoting and developing aquaculture in Africa, a prestige award was awarded to Dr Abraham Iyambo," he added. The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources also gave recognition to the best and most hard working person in the aquaculture industry in the country. "We from the Ministry of Fisheries decided to award the person who has put the most effort into the aquaculture industry in Namibia. And we recognised one person and he is Jurgen Klein. Since the 1970s, he has been experimenting in farming with oysters," said Klingelhoeffer. According to Klingelhoeffer, they used certain criteria in identifying the best achiever. Klingelhoeffer was quick to say Klein is a self-made scientist and he complies 100 percent with the legal framework and government policy in place. Klein also succeeded in opening a hatchery (maternity ward for oysters) at Mile 4 for oyster Osteria edulis, said Klingelhoeffer. He also farms with oyster Crasostera gigas. Taking into account the achievements, successes and initiatives of Klein, the Ministry of Fisheries also decided to nominate him as the 'Most significant contributor to Namibian Aquaculture 2009.' "This will be an annual award that will recognise a person who has put the most effort into promoting and developing aquaculture." Deputy Minister of Fisheries Kilus Nguvauva received the award for 'best Aquaculture of the year 2009'on behalf of Dr Abraham Iyambo over the weekend at the end of the international aquaculture conference.
