WINDHOEK - Chief Vipuira Kapuuo has warned the Ovitoto community against employing workers that have no identity documents.
Kapuuo made this warning following the murder of an elderly resident of Okandjira in Ovitoto, where two other women (a mother and daughter) were also killed. The community suspects that the killer of Erica Tjiho, 63 years, was her worker who had been left to look after the women. The chief said the suspect had no identity documents. Three women have been killed in Okandjira since three months ago. The latest murder was almost two weeks ago. He said it proved difficult to report cases to the police where the suspected culprit could not be positively identified. He said on a number of occasions, workers were employed under a certain name, only to commit crimes, leave and seek employment elsewhere under a completely different name. "Don't employ people without IDs. They can kill you and if we go to the police you will not exactly know who committed the crime," he warned. The chief is expected to address the Ovitoto community next week Saturday on the same matter. During the suspect's court appearance on Monday last week, the community presented a petition to the Okahandja Magistrate's Court in which they expressed grief over the manner in which women in the area are being killed and asked the magistrate to take into consideration the interests of the public when handling such cases. "Women are no longer safe in Namibia," the petition reads. They said the accused should be denied bail and be detained in a facility in Windhoek for his own safety. Back to Top |
