WINDHOEK - Prime Minister Nahas Angula has asked for the immediate fulfilment of the recent commitments by the G20, the implementation of United Nation plans on Western Sahara as well as for the independence of a Palestinian state in the Middle East.
Prime Minister Angula addressed the 15th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Egypt last week. Leaders of the world's leading economies pledged in April to "do whatever is necessary to restore confidence, growth and jobs, and repair the financial system to restore lending, strengthen financial regulation to rebuild trust as well as to fund and reform international financial institutions to overcome the crisis and prevent future crises." Angula told fellow 118 member states in the Non-Aligned Movement to call for the "immediate fulfilment of these commitments to help bring the world economy back on the growth path." Regional and sub-regional development banks need recapitalisation in order to respond to requests for development financing, while at the same time, the world trade needs resuscitation to contribute to development, including trade financing. Yet amid such needs, the impasse on the Doha round of trade negotiations continues, with negative impacts on development and the fight against poverty and hunger. Prime Minister Angula says this is of concern to Namibia. "The World Trade Organization (WTO) needs to deliver on its development promise, including through equitable market access for developing countries in order to boost the global economy," he said. Prime Minister Angula further said the current hard times remind of the importance of solidarity and mutual support among countries in order to mitigate the effects of the crisis on the peoples. "South to south cooperation and triangular cooperation are more than ever before vital in order to effectively deal with this world financial and economic crisis and its impact on development," he said. The Prime Minister further called on the Non-Aligned Movement to bear in mind the plight of those still under foreign occupation, drawing their attention to the unresolved issue of Western Sahara in spite of numerous resolutions from the United Nations' General Assembly and Security Council. "The Saharawi people have waited too long to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination. There is no justification for their continued suffering. We should stand together in solidarity and demand the implementation of the UN Plan on Western Sahara without pre-conditions," said Angula. The same call for solidarity also went out for the attainment of the independence of the Palestine State, living in peace side by side with Israel. "We reject all conditions being placed in the way of resolving this long conflict. The international community, including our Non-Aligned Movement, should intensify efforts to find solutions to these and other questions of self-determination. Indeed, our Movement is founded on strong principles that have sustained us to this day and we cannot fail our founding fathers," said Prime Minister Angula. Back to Top |
