NGOMA - Boundless Southern Africa (BSA) has the potential to become the greatest adventure route in the world, its team leader Kingsley Holgate has said.
The route, which spans from the Indian to the Atlantic Ocean and links nine southern African countries including Namibia, seven transfrontier conservation areas, 30 national parks and reserves and communities, aims to link nature, culture and community in 120 days. The expedition, which departed from the International Tourism Indaba in Durban, South Africa on May 11, reached the Caprivi region last week, where events officiated by Minister of Environment and Tourism Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Holgate were held at Ngoma and Sangwali areas. The event also brought together traditional leaders including King Liswani III, as well as community members. The event at Ngoma Sports Field was the first of four events scheduled for Namibia under the ambit of Boundless Southern Africa, with others held at Sangwali also in Caprivi on Saturday, Warmbad on August 8 and at Orangemund on August 19. Holgate will conclude his expedition in Namibia in Orangemund on August 19, which is envisaged to be a memorable day to be known as Presidential Day, according to Nandi-Ndaitwah. The day promises to be a "colourful event that will bring together cultures of the eight countries, uniting them on shared understanding that tourism is everybody's business," according to Nandi-Ndaitwah. The activities at Ngoma included traditional dances, an art competition for primary school children and a soccer match. Holgate said the message of the expedition was to link nature, community and culture, because "we can't have people and wild animals alone". He said through the 2010 World Cup, Africa has been chosen to host the biggest event of the world. Boundless Southern Africa is a marketing initiative promoting the seven transfrontier conservation areas (TFCAs) within southern Africa to potential investors and tourists around the world. The BSA unites African nations as viable and worthy collective tourist destinations and thereby boosting economic growth. BSA was launched at the 2008 Tourism Indaba in Durban as nine Southern African countries' marketing brand to represent some of the best tourism products the region has to offer. The transfronteir conservation areas and parks in the route include /Ai-/Ais - Richtersveld (South Africa and Namibia), Kgalagadi (Botswana and South Africa), Kavango Zambezi (Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe), Greater Mapungubwe (Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe), Great Limpopo (Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe), Lubombo (Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa) and Maloti Drakensberg Transfrontier (Lesotho and South Africa). Three school children were chosen winners of the art competition. Their art works will compete with others from the eight other countries. Back to Top |
