WINDHOEK - Executive Director of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) Dr Laurie Marker has been awarded the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award for Conservation.Marker received the award at the weeklong 32nd International Wildlife Film Festival, held in Missoula, Montana (USA) in May. The filmmakers' festival 2009's theme was 'Global Vision: Wild in Focus'. The International Wildlife Film Festival is the premier venue for wildlife, natural history, environmental and nature films. It recognises individuals in the media and conservation fields for their exemplary service, knowledge and impact in wildlife filmmaking and conservation. In her acceptance remarks, Marker said the cheetah is a keystone species that deserves to have a place on earth, but it could be extinct within 20 years were there no efforts to stop this trend. She added that in Namibia, which has the world's largest wild cheetah population, the cheetah number has stabilised during the last 15 years "thanks to the willingness of local farmers, government, NGOs, businesses, and the entire community, to accept alternate ways to share the land with cheetahs and cooperate with CCF". A statement from CCF said Dr Marker spoke to thousands of festival attendees, including almost 4 000 students and teachers. Marker recently concluded a six-week tour to the United States and Europe where she discussed CCF's work to conserve the world's fastest land animal, the cheetah. She then travelled to Europe, where she lectured at various zoos in the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, CCF and Parc ALPHA have signed a cooperation agreement to address conflict between predators and humans. The agreement was concluded during a two-day meeting in southern France with local government officials, scientists and conservationists, which was presided over by Gaston Franco, Mayor of St Martin Vésubie and recently elected to the European Parliament. The statement said the cooperation is the result of a recent visit to CCF by representatives of Parc ALPHA - an organisation dedicated to wolf conservation in France to learn about the success of CCF's Integrated Livestock Predator Management programmes, which provide farmers with tools and education to help them maximise productivity while minimising livestock losses to cheetahs and other predators.
