WINDHOEK - The National Assembly (NA) is currently reviewing its five-year strategic plan in a quest to better serve the citizens of this country.
Speaking at the official opening of a one-day stakeholders' conference on the strategic plan on Friday, Speaker of the National Assembly, Theo-Ben Gurirab, said parliamentarians have an obligation to serve the people of the country. He said the strategic plan is part of the government's overall strategy to encourage and facilitate a higher degree of coherence among public sector institutions. The strategic plan is also aimed at improving upon the systems for resource planning and performance management. Gurirab said, "The idea of a strategic plan for the NA was endorsed as a deliberate strategy to better envisage the role and engagement of a democratic parliament in a highly challenging economy, streamlining service delivery and widening public diplomacy within a competitive geopolitical environment in the 21st century." The Speaker further noted that it was important for members of parliament to develop consensus on the way forward, and to provide a roadmap to position the legislature, parliamentarians and management staff with the requisite skills in an increasingly modernising world. He said proper planning is needed if government has to reach developmental goals such as the Millennium Development Goals and Vision 2030. Gurirab also assured participants at the conference that the NA "is a living and vibrant institution". He noted that Parliament reflects the pulse and aspirations of citizens, the community and the nation as a whole. Said Gurirab: "It is our desire to keep it that way, as a beacon of hope for the youth, children and future generations of Namibia as we mature as a people, a nation and functioning parliament." The five-year strategic plan is set for launch in October this year. NA staff members, parliamentarians, Electoral Commission of Namibia staff members, Ombudsman Adv John Walters and some foreign mission representatives attended the conference. Back to Top |
