WINDHOEK - Police in the Karas Region recently arrested a male mortuary worker at the Karasburg State Hospital after he allegedly raped the corpse of a woman who died in a road accident.
Karasburg Acting Regional Commander, Chief Inspector Nicodemus Nampala, confirmed to New Era yesterday that a 30-year-old man only known as Van Hendricks, allegedly has sexual intercourse with the corpse of a 44-year-old woman on December 23. According to the Acting Regional Commander, between 21h00 and 22h00 on Tuesday, December 23, the suspect was spotted by security guards entering the morgue, and locked himself in. Minutes later, the security guards at the hospital heard a loud bang and rushed to the morgue but found it locked. They alerted the police, who equally found the place locked. By the time the police officers got to the suspect's residence to fetch him and the key, they found him there. They walked him back to the mortuary, where they found the dead body of a woman lying on the floor next to the mortuary trolley. On the site were also two used condoms, the police said. It appears the suspect failed to put back the dead body where he had found it. Police told New Era the suspect is likely to have dropped the corpse tray in his effort to bring the body down from the shelf, hence the loud noise. He (suspect) was arrested instantly and appeared in court last Tuesday, Nampala confirmed. Under police case number CR 48/12/2008, Van Hendricks was charged with violation of a dead body and was denied bail by the court. Meanwhile, police in Ohangwena are investigating two separate cases in which two minors died. Twenty-two-month-old Nahambo Kakololo died in a sleeping hut and according to police, she had no history of illness. Also, three-year-old Emelia Nepembe died at Engela la-Kambode village after vomiting. Both incidents took place on New Year's Day. On the same day, an unknown person shot 52-year-old Fillep Jonisiu with a firearm. The incident took place in Beijing Street in Otjomuise, in the capital. Jonisiu was taken to Katutura State Hospital and the suspect is still at large. At Oshikango, police opened an inquest after a 29-year-old Angolan national hanged himself with a rope from a tree. The next of kin are yet to be informed and police investigations continue. Back to Top |
