Pieter de Villiers, the Mayor of Opuwo in his Christmas message wished everyone working and living in the town and those visiting a blessed Christmas and prosperous 2009:
"Christmas is an important time of the year for everyone and it is important that we all enjoy the festive period in a happy, safe and peaceful manner and that we enter 2009 alive and well," said the town mayor. "I therefore request the Namibian Police to be very strict during this time - no unlicensed or drunk drivers on the road, no selling of liquor to minors and to adults only during legal hours and in legal establishments. Let us not allow a few minutes of irresponsible 'fun' to spoil someone's future. "2009 will provide us with more opportunities to work together to build on the foundations of the successes we've already achieved. As Mayor of Opuwo I intend to continue to promote hard work, integrity and friendly, efficient customer service. I will also continue to provide strong leadership for the people of Opuwo as I believe a lot more can be achieved to make our town a safer, cleaner and more pleasant place for the community to live, work and socialise in. "Some of the multi-million dollar projects we plan in the new year include the establishment of a Cultural Village, replacing the Water Reticulation network in town, construction of an official Open Market, surveying of residential and business plots, construction of more houses as well as many other smaller projects. These projects will, amongst others, address the challenges of unemployment, housing shortage and water leakages. We are also working to get our bylaws gazetted which will help us tackle problems like animals in town and illegal dumping and construction. "This Christmas I am conscious of how much Opuwo is continually changing and developing. "During this last year we've faced many challenges and enjoyed many victories. One victory that I am especially proud of is the fact that we now have clean, drinkable water in our town for the first time ever. When all the old pipes are replaced next year the quality of water in your taps will be amongst the best in Namibia," said the mayor. "Another milestone is the completion of the tarred road to Kamanjab - for the first time in our town's existence residents can now drive to the rest of Namibia without having to suffer over bumpy, dusty roads." The mayor continued: "During 2008 we've also drawn up a Strategic Plan for the town council. This plan will help a lot towards ensuring sustained development during the next five years. The past year also saw the Town Council finally getting rid of corrupt staff members. We've already started appointing new qualified staff that will help to make Opuwo the most preferred town in Namibia. "Christmas is a time for giving and receiving, a time for sharing and for caring for each other. It is the time we remember how much God loves us - so much that He gave us the gift of His Son Jesus. With that in mind I would encourage everyone to remember all our elderly neighbours as well as the orphans and vulnerable children in our town. Let us reach out to these people and help them to also have a wonderful festive time - visit them, invite them for a meal, clean their homes or buy them a gift. By providing practical support to those who need it we are honouring King Jesus, whose birthday we celebrate, to establish His Kingdom in Opuwo. "And remember: Don't litter!! Please help us to keep Opuwo clean - together we can make Opuwo one of the top tourist destinations in the country." Back to Top |
