WINDHOEK - Masubia Chief Kisco Liswani III and his khuta last Thursday imposed a fine of six head of cattle and N$400 on a villager for contempt of the revered tribal court and for allegedly violating the grave of his son in a case that has left many astounded.
Caprivi residents have, in recent weeks, been left speechless in the case in which a cow gave birth reportedly to a beast strangely resembling a human baby. As if that was not enough, according to Chief Liswani III, the villager single-handedly conducted a voodoo ritual by burying the strange-looking calf on top of the grave of a son who died recently. At the two-day hearing before the khuta - one of the supreme symbols of authority for the Masubia tribe and that comprises the chief and a coterie of his indunas - the villager confessed having conducted a bizarre burial ritual of the strange-looking beast whose birth at Kabula-bula in Kabbe constituency caused a stir. "The suspect confessed before me and my khuta that the beastly calf resembling a human baby has its roots in a bizarre witchcraft case in which he used black magic so that he could multiply the number of cattle in his kraal after he consulted a Zambian witchdoctor," the chief told New Era yesterday. "The khuta fined him N$400 on a charge of contempt of court, which he paid on the spot on Wednesday at the beginning of the two-day trial, while a fine of six cattle was imposed on him after he confessed his role in the strange burial ritual," he said. "Initially, the suspect claimed he performed the mysterious ritual in order to 'protect' his children, but he later retracted this version after he was put under intense questioning by myself and my senior indunas. We exposed his falsehoods for what they were. And what he thought was a water-tight defence was shredded to smithereens," explained the chief. The chief further said after two days of hearing, more details emerged that shed some light into mind-boggling happenings within this mysterious and dark art still practised by some Africans who use it to enhance their fortunes and to "deal" with enemies. A senior State veterinarian in the Caprivi Region, Dr Frank Chitate, attributed the birth of the strange-looking calf to abnormalities that occur during organ development in the biological formation of animals such as cattle. But the chief and several others close to the case have dismissed this, saying detectives who exhumed the calf were baffled by a 'skull' resembling that of a human baby and on top of this the chief said the suspect made a confession and gave first-hand information. This information is also collaborated by findings of Induna Solomon Sihope Nyambe Ikosa from Kabula-bula sub-khuta, who conducted a parallel probe on behalf of the chief. The chief indicated he expects to issue summons to be sent to Zambia for the unnamed witchdoctor to explain the reason he dispensed the use of African juju that has brought the chief and his subjects to ridicule. All indications are that the bush doctor is also likely to be fined for giving bad influence to the chief's subject in this case, Jackson Timothy Siyeta, the villager at the centre of this bizarre happening.
