WINDHOEK - Swapo Party president, Hifikepunye Pohamba, has called on all political parties to faithfully respect the Namibian constitution and the laws of the republic.
Officially opening the fourth central committee meeting of the party on Friday afternoon in the capital, President Pohamba called on political parties to strictly adhere to the code of conduct subscribed to by all political parties. While opposition parties, notably the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), Congress of Democrats (CoD) and United Democratic Front (UDF) have accused the Swapo Party of intolerance and blamed party supporters for violence, Pohamba refused to accept the blame and noted that his party members are being provoked. The President called on his party members not to allow themselves to be provoked by elements, who have no political support in the country. The Head of State dismissed accusations that his party is causing anarchy and noted that his party enjoys support of more than 80 percent of the electorate and that should there be anarchy, the Swapo Party stands to lose most. "It is clear that there are elements in our country, who want to see anarchy in our country by relentlessly provoking the Swapo Party and thereafter pretend to be victims." Pohamba also called on all Namibians to respect members of the police force and said they symbolise State machinery and the Namibian State. "No violence against those in uniform should be allowed and those who might have grievances with our uniformed forces should follow official channels." The President, however, also urged the police to respect flags of political parties and said it is unacceptable for a police officer to throw a flag of a political party on the ground. "This act constitutes the highest act of provocation, which could result in violence and therefore police officers should strictly adhere to the principles of political impartiality at all times." Taking a swipe at the RDP, Pohamba said Swapo Party members must not allow themselves to be provoked by those elements that call themselves democrats and yet they occupy self-imposed positions to which they are not elected. "They pretend as if they are ruling this country and yet when it becomes too hot for them, they run away from participating even in a by-election" the President said in reference to the recent boycott of the Tobias Hainyeko by-election by a number of opposition parties. The President questioned the RDP's credentials as a serious political party and said if they cannot manage a by-election, how are they going manage general elections? "I sincerely appeal to them to refrain from engaging in acts of provocation and they must participate in the forthcoming elections so that we can democratically defeat them at the ballot box." The central committee meeting ended on Saturday. Back to Top |
