WINDHOEK - Namibian consumers must employ energy-saving measures this winter to help NamPower live up to the pledge made to South Africa’s Eskom during the World Cup 2010 event.
Eskom has notified the region that it would not have sufficient electricity to spare due to high domestic demand during the World Cup. NamPower has already brushed up its infrastructure – Van Eck power station is ready to run at full capacity and the commissioning of the Caprivi Link Interconnector takes place on June 11, the day after kick-off of the first World Cup match between South Africa and Mexico. Caprivi Link Interconnector would substitute a large percentage of the power that until hitherto comes from South Africa’s grid. For Namibia, June marks the start of winter, a peak period for the country’s electricity consumption, which last year hit an all-time high of 451 megawatts. This year’s peak consumption is expected to be 490 MW. Unlike in the past, this time Namibia has to do without the usual 40 percent reliance on Eskom-generated power. “Imports from Eskom would be at absolute minimum or zero,” says NamPower Managing Director, Paulinus Shilamba, adding that all the country’s generation plants would be at full speed and transmission lines have been serviced. NamPower would rope in consumers with an official power saving campaign to encourage energy conservation not only during the World Cup month but also beyond. Shilamba says they have pledged to help Eskom provide adequate power during the watershed event, by availing the usage of the Caprivi Link Interconnector that connects to the Zambian grid when Eskom wants to import power from other countries such as Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition to the Caprivi Link Interconnector, the Anixa Diesel Power Station and a fourth unit at Ruacana would put in additional energy to the grid in the coming year. Work has commenced at Anixa Diesel Power Station and Shilamba says every aspect of the 22.5 MW is on track. The commissioning is scheduled for end of this year or early next year. The total cost of the project is N$375 million, of which N$250 million is a subsidy from Government. The fourth unit at Ruacana is in implementation phase and commissioning is scheduled for March 2012. “Most of the key equipment such as generator and turbine, will be delivered on site by October 2010,” says Shilamba. The fourth unit at Ruacana will cost N$750 million. Back to Top |
